Ministry of Forest and Environment organized “Mountain Advocacy Summit (MAS2022)” on 20-21 September 2022 in Jomsom, Mustang. The program was co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), DCA, ICIMOD, IUCN, UNDP, and UKAid, NTNC and managed by Karnali Integrated Rural Development and Research Center (KIRDARC Nepal). The inauguration session was chaired by Hon’ble Pradeep Yadav, Minister for Forests and Environment. The chief guest Rt. Hon’ble Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prime Minister of Nepal addressed the program virtually. Similarly, special guest was Hon’ble Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokharel, Chief Minister of Gandaki Province.
The Summit was successful to celebrate the UN General Assembly’s designation of the year 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development (IYM2022). This the culmination event of the year with series of program organized by the Ministry as an opportunity for Nepal to highlight its mountain agenda along with celebrating IYM as a responsibility (UN member country) being one of the mountainous country. In the program, Ministers, representatives of government entities, development partners, CSOs, farmers, investment partners, entrepreneurs/private sectors, policy makers, local government representatives participated.
Objective
The overall objective of the celebrating the year 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development (IYM2022) is to develop common roadmap for sustainable mountain solutions by drawing attention of local, provincial, national, regional and international communities to Nepal’s mountain issues. Whereas, specific objectives include;
- Deliver messages to the Government of Nepal, province governments and local levels to integrate mountain concerns into their policies, programs and budgets
- Foster consensus on the position Nepal should take about the impact of climate change on and possible solutions to mountain economy, biodiversity, cultures, women and mountain-lowland interconnections in international fora
- Promote mountain tourism by showcasing mountain landscapes, biodiversity and cultures
- Synthesize a roadmap on partnership and collaboration among mountainous countries as well as regional and international organizations working in mountain issues
